These chickens were very much appreciated by the families. We hope that these chickens will provide income and food for these families.

Thank you to the fundraising project of “Henny Penny”. The funds were provided by children from several schools who gave up their pennies so that the people here could have chickens and food for the chicks. Great job kids!!!

This past week all these families were very happy to receive 10 chickens and a bag of food for their chickens.

Mayan Families Canada group helped distribute the chickens and it was a lot of fun for everyone!

These chickens have great value to the families that received them. With the cost of living up 38% and the wages not going up at all , it is a very difficult time for people who were already on the edge. We have many families coming to us for help with food. Yesterday , we had a family of 10 children here who had nothing to eat but tortillas with salt for the past week.

These chickens have the possibility of providing income, eggs and food for these families.

It was a rainy day yesterday in Panajachel, the wet season is really starting. It was also the day that we were giving out chickens to 20 families.

At the end of every month we give out 10 chicks and a supply of chicken food to families. We hope that these chickens will help the families, either by selling the chickens, starting a business with their chickens or keeping the chickens for eggs and their own personal consumption.

All these families need more food and more protein. We hope that these chickens are a way to obtain this goal.

The rain made everyone damp but the happiness was not dulled by the rain. Everyone was thrilled to be part of the Mayan Families Chickens Program.

We were also fortunate to have a group from Airline Ambassadors visiting and they helped give out chicks, put rain capes on people and give out donations and candy. Despite the rain , everyone had a good time.

PANAJACHEL 4/11/08–Forty families supported by Mayan Families each received 10 baby chickens today. The number of receiving families represents the great success of the Chickens Program. Normally, the monthly distribution is twenty families. We were able to double the normal distribution due to the wonderful support of the “bucks for clucks” fund raising project and many sponsors of students.

On hand for the event were visiting sponsors Holly and Mike from New Jersey.

Here’s what Jackie had to say “I wanted to give you a heads up that a check for around $1,100.00 will be coming in from Shiloh United Methodist Church in Jasper, Indiana.” This very generous contribution is for the Chickens Program. Jackie also reported “The Youth Group at church sold chickens for an Easter mission and were quite succesful.”

This is such inspiring news. Fund raising activities such as this will enable many needy families to have a valued hand up.
